Netflix has ended its plans to expand the Percy Jackson universe. The previously announced film trilogy project for the adaptation of Rick Riordan’s other fantasy adventure book series, The Kane Chronicles, has been canceled by Netflix.
Netflix Percy Jackson spinoff Kane Chronicles canceled after four years
Prior to the series airing on Disney+ in December, the Percy Jackson universe looked set to expand with a trilogy of movies on Netflix for the Kane Chronicles books. However, four years on from that announcement, author Rick Riordan has revealed that Netflix has decided not to go ahead with the venture.
Riordan said that Netflix has decided to give up on making these books into movies. As a result, any studio that wants to make the movies will first have to cover the pre-production costs. According to Riordan, this situation is not unusual and that streaming services are all tightening their belts and reviewing what they can cancel in order to save money.
Despite the recently announced second season for Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Netflix was unable to keep the Percy Jackson spinoff Kane Chronicles from being shelved. Riordan asked us to stay tuned for the planned spinoff for Magnus Chase, another character he has mentioned in the past.
Kane Chronicles focuses on the magician siblings Carter and Sadie, who, like Percy, are descendants of gods. But while Percy and the characters in his inner circle are descended from Greek gods, the Kane siblings are descended from Narmer and Ramses the Great, and their adventures revolve more around Egyptian history and mythology. Their trilogy (and accompanying short stories) is also more youth-oriented than the main series.
Since the Percy Jackson & Olympians series is currently on Disney+, it’s likely that Netflix will also take over the Percy Jackson spinoff Kane Chronicles. What do you think? Please don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comments section.
