Netflix is one of the first digital streaming platforms that comes to mind. However, the company started renting DVDs in 1998. This 25-year-old service will be shut down next month. Netflix did not neglect to surprise the last customer it sent DVDs to.
Netflix quits DVD rental business in September
Netflix started in 1998 as a DVD-by-mail rental company in the US and today has more than 40 million subscribers. With the rise of digital streaming, Netflix’s DVD base has shrunk considerably.
In recent months, the streaming giant announced that its DVD rental service would be permanently shut down on September 29. In an image shared on social media, it was stated that some customers will be sent “gift DVDs” for the last time.
The company will provide bonuses to certain DVD subscribers to commemorate the closure of its legendary service. In an email to customers, it said that “bonus discs” would be shipped on September 29, the last day of the service. This will allow subscribers to receive up to 10 DVD or Blu-ray movies.
The bonus discs seem to be a gift from the company to its loyal customers. However, it is not clear whether Netflix will ask for the return of these DVDs. The deadline for unpaid rentals is October 27.
A Netflix spokesperson said, “After more than two decades, the iconic red envelopes will be a thing of the past. While we’ve made the DVD subscription obsolete for most, many have fond memories of receiving familiar packages in the mail.”
