Google is developing a new notification management system supported by artificial intelligence with Android 16. This feature, called “Notification Organizer,” will automatically group users’ notifications under four main categories.
Notifications that will be grouped under categories such as promotions, news, social notifications, and recommendations will be both silenced and combined under a single heading. The feature is expected to be available in Android 16’s first three-month update package (QPR1).
Notification Organizer with artificial intelligence on the way
The system works similarly to Gmail’s email classification method. Artificial intelligence analyzes incoming notifications and categorizes them according to their content. Notifications that are found to be a match during this process are both silenced and grouped.
In this way, users only see important content directly, while other notifications are kept organized in the background. The application description states that this process is completely carried out by artificial intelligence and that in some cases, incorrect classifications may occur.
Although the developed framework is seen to be included in the open source code base of Android 16, the artificial intelligence service that carries out the analysis and grouping process is connected to the Android System Intelligence application. This service is not included in the open source version of Android. Therefore, the feature may not work on every Android 16 device. The core components used for notification organization are only activated through the Android System Intelligence service.
Google continues to test the feature on the Pixel 8 Pro. The settings page, which can be accessed manually in the Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 version, also allows users to determine which applications can be excluded from this system.
In this way, important notifications are prevented from being accidentally put in the background. The fact that the settings have been expanded to cover all applications reaffirms that artificial intelligence has to interpret a wide variety of content and can make mistakes in some cases.
This new notification system may be exclusive to Pixel phones at the launch stage. The possibility of the feature being introduced with the Pixel 10 series and later offered to older models with Pixel Drop updates is being evaluated.
However, it is still unclear whether the system will require powerful on-device AI models like the Gemini Nano. This uncertainty makes it difficult to make a definitive statement about which devices the feature will reach.
Although it has not yet been introduced live, there is direct evidence that the system works. Details about notification organization and control options can be viewed on an inactive page in the settings menu. Although the user interface has not yet been released, it is certain that the “Notification Organizer” feature will be a step that will significantly transform the Android experience.
