Apple has started distributing the third beta of iOS 17.5 to developers. The new beta update comes about a week after the release of the second beta. So what does the iOS 17.5 / iPadOS 17.5 beta 3 update offer?
iOS 17.5 / iPadOS 17.5 beta 3 update
iOS 17.5 brings major improvements to Apple devices under new regulations introduced in the European Union. Developers will now be able to offer apps through the App Store and other app marketplaces. Apps will also be available for download directly from websites.
This support breaks developers’ dependence on the App Store. However, developers must have been a member of the Apple Developer Program for at least two years. They must also have an app with more than 1 million installs in the EU.
Code changes in the new beta also point to potential future features for iPad. Support for new Apple Pencil models is highlighted. It is also expected that a feature similar to battery health, currently available on iPhone, will be available for iPad.
iOS and iPadOS developers can test the third iOS 17.5 release by going to Settings > Software Update > Beta Update. As with previous betas, iOS 17.5 focuses on bug fixes and performance improvements rather than new features.
Once beta testing is complete, the stable iOS 17.5 version could be released in the coming weeks. This means that all users in the EU will receive the App Store changes.
