With Android 16, notifications will be more unique than ever before. The new notification system, called Rich Ongoing Notifications, will allow you to see notifications in the status bar, similar to the iPhone’s “Dynamic island” feature. However, Google’s change is not entirely iPhone-like. Here are the details
Dynamic island-like notifications coming with Android 16
With the new feature, Android users will no longer see certain notifications from apps as little icons, but as little “chips” that stand out with text and background color. For example, you’ll be able to see the countdown to your phone’s alarm, how many minutes until the car you’re waiting for in your taxi app arrives, or how your flight information is doing right in the status bar.
The status bar will instantly show when an alarm is about to go off or when your meeting starts in five minutes with these colorful chips. By the way, Google was inspired by Android’s notification history when it introduced this feature. In fact, the idea of displaying information with “chips” in the status bar is not entirely new for Android.
In Android 12, Google added a chip that shows the active search time. Now, by opening this function to all applications in Android 16, we can say that it responds to the dynamic features of iOS. In addition, with this new API, developers will be able to make their apps more attractive with colorful and interactive notifications that users can get direct information from.
The Rich Ongoing Notifications (dynamic island) feature is still under development and is not fully formed. Users will now be able to get a more personalized experience with quick-access, colorful notifications that they can actively receive information from, rather than just seeing icons clustered in a small corner of the screen.
