Battery technology is improving every day, but this time a significant development has happened very close to us. A European research team has developed a new solid-state battery with a 20% higher energy density than current lithium-ion batteries . This battery offers a full 1070 Wh/L energy density instead of the 800 Wh/L energy density offered by current lithium-ion batteries. It will be used in a wide range of applications from electric vehicles to portable devices. It is also said to have a longer life and be more affordable.
New generation battery from European researchers: Energy density is 20% higher, cost is lower!
First of all, this battery was developed as part of a project called SOLiDIFY and is supported by 14 different European research organizations and partnerships. The main difference of the battery is that it uses a solid electrolyte instead of a liquid . This not only makes the batteries safer, but also significantly increases their energy density.
During the development of the battery, the charging time was also optimized. The research team managed to reduce the charging time of the new battery to 3 hours . It is also stated that these batteries can last up to 100 charging cycles throughout their life . In other words, we are waiting for batteries that not only store more energy, but also charge faster and have a longer life.
Another important advantage is the cost of production. The development team predicts that the production cost of these batteries will be below 150 euros/kWh . Since the production process is designed to be adaptable to existing factories and production lines, this new technology seems to be widely used.
