Apple announced a long time ago that the next generation Apple Silicon Mac Pro is definitely on its way. It is still not known exactly when the product will arrive, but it is reported that test work on the device continues. According to new information, the design for the next generation Mac Pro based on Apple Silicon will not change as expected.
Apple Silicon Mac Pro won’t support a RAM upgrade
According to Mark Gurman, the computer has exactly the same design as the current Mac Pro. In other words, the new “Pro” will be larger than expected, and despite this larger body, it will not allow for RAM expansion due to the working logic of Apple Silicon processors. In terms of expandability, users should expect to be able to upgrade SSD size, GPU, and networking capabilities. This will be the main selling point compared to the forthcoming M2 Ultra Mac Studio, which does not allow for any expandability.
The next generation Mac Pro was previously rumored to come to market with processors named “M2 Ultra” and “M2 Extreme”. Last week, Gurman stated that the “M2 Extreme” processor was shelved due to some cost and production difficulties.
Previously, it was said that one of the processors could have a 24-core CPU, 76-core GPU and 256 GB RAM at the top. The most powerful processor option of the series was said to combine a 48-core CPU, 152-core GPU and 256 GB of RAM on top. The most powerful Apple Silicon processor that the company currently offers is the M1 Ultra model. The top version of this processor offers a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU and 64 GB or 128 GB RAM.
If the information is correct, even the weakest version of the new Mac Pro will be more powerful than the high-end Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra. The next-generation Mac Pro will launch before the end of 2023 and will most likely be paired with Reality Pro in the spring.
