In a move set to utilize over a billion Android devices for locating tags (similar to Galaxy SmartTag) and earbuds this summer, Google decided to dress ‘Find My Device’ in a fresh logo. Over the past few years, the app’s symbol on Android was a white pin with a phone in the center against a green backdrop, indicative of the app’s map-based nature.
The revamped logo maintains the maps motif, incorporating a plus sign design in the company’s four colors, suggestive of radar and scanning. The logo’s vibrant hues and contemporary touch are evident and quite a departure from the former design. However, it carries visible graphical drawbacks – the logo could potentially blend with other blue/red/yellow/green icons on your phone.
The green color, which evokes a sense of security and Android familiarity, was particularly suitable for an application you might resort to in moments of panic. Thus, some might argue the former logo’s functionality outweighed its aesthetics. Recently, Google refrained from introducing the four-color design to apps like Play Books, but utilized the concept for Google Authenticator and Arts & Culture.
