A new report from South Korea predicts an exciting future for 0.2nm chip technology. The Institute of Semiconductor Engineers announced that by 2040, processor circuits could descend to the 0.2 nanometer level, ushering in the Angstrom (Å) era. This represents a revolutionary leap in current technology.
0.2nm Chip Technology and Future Vision
The ‘Semiconductor Technology Roadmap 2026’ report published by the Korea Institute of Semiconductor Engineers outlines the industry’s goals for the next 15 years. According to the report, even the latest technologies, such as Samsung’s recently announced 2nm GAA-based Exynos 2600, will be just a starting point compared to this new goal. The aim is to reach the 0.2nm manufacturing process by 2040 and implement innovative designs such as monolithic 3D architecture.
However, achieving this goal will not be easy. The report emphasizes that numerous technical obstacles and challenges lie in going below 1nm. Revolutionary advancements are needed in many areas, from materials science to manufacturing techniques. Therefore, the coming years will be a critical period for research and development activities.
The roadmap doesn’t only cover processors. A major breakthrough is also envisioned in storage technologies. NAND flash memory, currently reaching 321 layers, is targeted to reach up to 2000 layers in the future. This development will provide an incredible increase in storage capacity and speed. Furthermore, such advancements are vital for artificial intelligence (AI) and other data-intensive applications.
