Apple reminds us of iMac G4 with its new smart display
Apple is reportedly working on two new smart display devices as part of its investments in smart home products. According to Bloomberg’s report, one of these devices will have a large screen mounted on a robotic arm.
This high-end version will have a price tag of around $1000 and will support media playback and video calls. Due to its advanced technology, the product may not be released until 2026.
To make smart home products more accessible, Apple is also working on a second, more affordable smart display without a robotic arm. This device will have a small lower chassis reminiscent of the iMac G4 desktop computer from the early 2000s. This angled chassis will come with a square screen about the size of two iPhones.
Dubbed “iMac G4-style” internally, it will include apps for functions beyond smart home controls. Its main purpose, however, will be media playback, communication with other devices and control of Apple and third-party smart home accessories. Accordingly, the company is designing it as a “smart home center”.
The price and release date of the more affordable display is not yet known. However, it is expected to be more accessible compared to the high-end robotic model.
