Renewable energies came to the fore in a race in the USA. A team of three young engineers managed to cover the 3100 miles New York to Los Angeles with a solar car running entirely on solar energy. They also made history by completing the journey in a very short time.
Solar-powered car Cannonball Sun completed the journey in 13 days
In a race known as the Cannonball Run, a car powered by solar energy came to the fore. The custom-built solar vehicle, called Cannonball Sun, completed the 3100 miles route after 13 days, 15 hours and 19 minutes of driving.
The real record of the Cannonball Run belongs to a different person who completed it in 25 hours with an internal combustion vehicle. However, it should be noted that it was the first time that the crossing from one end of the US to the other using only solar energy was successfully completed.
Developed by three engineering students, the Cannonball Sun demonstrated the advantages of solar cars over electric and internal combustion. The vehicle is powered by three electric motors and batteries powered by eight solar panels.
The vehicle took five months to develop. It was also possible to reduce the weight of the vehicle thanks to its outer casing made of welded pipes and corrugated plastic.
The Cannonball Sun project has shown that long-distance travel entirely on solar energy is now possible. Although it was developed for a competition, it seems to be an example for big companies.
