NVIDIA plans to launch the next generation of Blackwell GPUs next year. However, it said its graphics card models may face some challenges in keeping up with demand. The company pointed to the growing market for artificial intelligence and high-performance computing hardware.
NVIDIA thinks Blackwell GPUs could be delayed
Colette Kress, CFO of NVIDIA, spoke about the new Blackwell architecture on the earnings call released the other day. She said she expects “demand to far exceed supply” for Blackwell-based B100 chips. While NVIDIA has shortened lead times for its AI chip H100, Blackwell pre-orders have increased, she said.
It is curious that NVIDIA has already acknowledged the shortage in the coming period. Considering that its biggest competitors AMD and Intel have not issued any warnings, the market share of Blackwell GPUs could be in jeopardy.
Also, demand in the AI market is not expected to slow down. This could lead organizations and users who don’t want to wait for NVIDIA’s new graphics cards to turn to alternative brands.
AMD is already producing the MI300 GPU and has accelerated work on the next-generation MI400. Intel has started to offer its Gaudi 3 and Falcon Shores AI chips to major brands. However, it should be noted that NVIDIA is leading the AI market by a large margin.
