Nintendo’s next-generation handheld console, the Switch 2, has achieved significant success in the gaming industry since its launch on June 5th. According to the company’s first quarter report for fiscal 2026, the console reached 6 million sales in just seven weeks.
Nintendo Switch 2 breaks sales records
With this performance, the Switch 2 became the fastest-selling product of all time in video game hardware history. The console surpassed the opening sales figures of the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the original Switch models during the same period.
According to data shared by Nintendo, the Switch 2 achieved significant momentum with 5.82 million units sold in its first four weeks. During the same period, the PS5 sold 4.5 million units, and the Xbox Series X/S 3.1 million.
The first Switch model, released in 2017, saw four-week sales of 2.74 million units. Based on these comparisons, the next-generation console has clearly taken over the top spot both globally and regionally.
The Switch 2 sold 1.5 million units in Japan in just one month, making it the fastest-selling game console in the country’s history. In the US, it sold 1.6 million units in its first month, surpassing the PlayStation 4’s opening record set in 2013. Nintendo officials state that this strong sales momentum stems not only from specific markets but also from strong global demand.
Due to higher-than-expected demand, production is being constrained. Nintendo has initiated efforts to increase production capacity. The company’s previous goal of 15 million units sold in 10 months appears likely to be surpassed sooner, given current sales figures.
