A new patent agreement has been signed between Apple and Nokia. Under this multi-year contract, Apple will be able to use the technology giant’s patents. According to the announcement made by Nokia, 5G technologies will be at the top of these patents.
Apple will use Nokia’s patents for 5G and more
The patent agreement between Nokia and Apple was due to expire in 2023. Taking action on this, the two companies announced that they have signed a new long-term licence agreement. Apple, which wants to use the work in the field of 5G technology, did not disclose how much it paid for the agreement.
Apple is working to adapt 5G technologies to the iPhone family. iPhone 12 or later models can work compatible with 5G networks of certain operators. In this regard, it prefers to use Nokia’s patent portfolio and innovative technologies.
It is known that the technology giant has more than 5 thousand patents related to 5G technology and more than 20 thousand patents in total. Nokia can open these licences to companies with which it has an agreement. Nokia’s biggest customers include companies such as Apple and Samsung.
The co-operation between Nokia and Apple dates back to 2017, when the two companies had a legal dispute. As the previous agreement was about to expire, both parties preferred to expand their cooperation and market their licences to each other.
On the other hand, it should be reminded that Apple has been developing its own 5G modems for some time. The company, which already buys these parts from Qualcomm, may include its own modems in the iPhone SE 4 model.
