Nokia may take a back seat as HMD launches its own brand

Ana sayfa / Smartphones

HMD Global, which has owned Nokia since 2016, has announced that it is working on a new brand. HMD model smartphones will be developed together with the Nokia brand and will take their place on the shelves. Details about the announcement were made by Jean-Francois Baril, CEO of HMD Global.

HMD brand will be on the sales together with Nokia

HMD Global acquired the rights to the Nokia brand in 2016. The manufacturer, which has been selling in the European and Asian markets for about 7 years, has recently focused on $ 100-200 entry-level models. In contrast, HMD Global is working on a new smartphone brand.

Details on the HMD brand’s strategy and partnerships are still unclear. However, Nokia will reportedly pursue a strategy of delivering “high quality and affordable mobile devices”. The company also underlined its commitment to sustainability and repairability.

On the other hand, the license agreement between HMD Global and Nokia will expire in 2026. It seems likely that the company wants to bring its own brand to the forefront before 2026 and put Nokia in the background. However, it should not be ignored that the license agreement can be renewed after three years.

A leaked image for the HMD brand also revealed the brand’s logo. The manufacturer, which will prefer HMD instead of HMD Global, seems to reflect this name in its logo. The Nokia logo, which changed a while ago, followed a similar strategy.
