NVIDIA and MediaTek introduce an ARM-based chip
In 2016, Microsoft granted Qualcomm exclusive rights to develop and produce ARM chips for Windows. However, this agreement is about to expire, and Microsoft is making a significant move for the next generation of ARM-based laptops. According to a special report from Reuters, MediaTek will start developing its own ARM-based CPUs to be launched in 2025. This move could end Qualcomm’s long-standing monopoly.
MediaTek has a long history of designing and developing system-on-chip solutions for a wide range of electronic devices. However, instead of building its CPU architecture from scratch, MediaTek plans to use ARM’s ready-made components for a faster development process. This means that the new chips can be brought to market more quickly.
ARM officials stated that one of their customers developed a chip in about nine months. It is believed that MediaTek could work at a similar speed. This collaboration with NVIDIA will provide a significant advantage, especially in AI-supported applications.
Apple achieved great success with its own ARM-based M series chips in Mac computers. This success has also driven Microsoft to adopt ARM designs. The new generation of ARM-based devices will be able to run AI applications more efficiently. This could threaten Intel’s dominance in the PC market.
