Nvidia and Rolls Royce are working together on quantum technology!

Nvidia, renowned for its graphics cards, is collaborating with Rolls Royce on quantum computer technologies. By combining their strengths, the two companies are emulating a quantum computer in the production of jet engines. Yes, they are emulating because the current technology is not yet sufficient for the production of a fully functional quantum computer. However, we can see what a quantum computer is capable of.

Rolls Royce is attempting to use these quantum computers in the production of jet engines for aircraft. Even the most powerful computers currently available on the market struggle to calculate the power generated by a jet engine and how it affects the aircraft during takeoff. Therefore, the presence of quantum computer technology, particularly in the aviation sector, is essential.

In the initial stages, Rolls Royce used Nvidia’s GPUs called A-100 for their quantum computers. At present, they can be referred to as quantum computers in name only. However, when we consider the hardware aspect, it is difficult to claim that they are true quantum computers. They are more like quantum bits, as they only have a few dozen qubits compared to real quantum computers. This limits our ability to fully rely on the calculations performed by these devices.

However, when it comes to Rolls Royce’s algorithms, we can truly say they have a quantum foundation. The brand’s HHL-based algorithm has the potential to significantly accelerate CFD simulations, but we do not yet have a quantum computer capable of running it. Therefore, the initial tests and collaboration with Nvidia are of great importance.
