Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made striking statements regarding the chip competition between the US and China. Huang stated that China lags behind the US by nanoseconds in semiconductor production and said the Washington administration should abandon its attempts to close the market with export restrictions.
China can reach the top of semiconductor production
Huang emphasized the need to lift restrictions. He argued that allowing US companies like Nvidia to continue selling to China would actually be more beneficial for the US to expand its technological influence and increase its geopolitical clout.
Huang highlighted the competence and rapid development of Chinese engineers. He also addressed China’s controversial 9-9-6 work culture, stating that they face a strong, innovative, ambitious, and fast-moving competitor.
These statements come as Nvidia prepares to re-release its long-held H20 AI GPU to the Chinese market. The US Department of Commerce reportedly began licensing the H20 in August. Nvidia is also working on a new model that will meet current restrictions but offer higher performance.
Meanwhile, China has accelerated its goal of establishing a self-sufficient ecosystem. Huawei’s Atlas 900 A3 SuperPoD systems have entered mass production with the company’s Ascend 910B chips. Huawei aims to meet or even exceed current global performance levels with its next-generation Ascend series on its roadmap to 2027.
