As May approaches, the rumored launch of Nvidia’s RTX 4060 Ti has been generating buzz, especially regarding its potential $450 price tag. This would make the new card only $50 more expensive than its predecessor, the RTX 3060 Ti.
Although the increase in price is relatively small, consumers must still decide whether the anticipated performance boost is worth the extra cost.
Rumored specifications and performance
The pricing rumor comes from sources cited by the Red Gaming Tech channel, the same source that provided the early $599 figure for the recently launched RTX 4070. The expected performance of the RTX 4060 Ti is slightly better than the RTX 3070, which was priced at $499. Given the pricing trend of the RTX 4070, which offers RTX 3080 performance for $100 less, the $50 price difference between the RTX 4060 Ti and the RTX 3070 seems reasonable.
Nonetheless, some consumers might question the higher price tag for the upcoming graphics card, considering that it offers less actual GPU hardware compared to previous models in the series. As Nvidia increasingly relies on the promise of DLSS 3.0 and Frame Generation technology to deliver better performance, customers might be paying more for software improvements rather than hardware advancements.
The future of GPU pricing
There is speculation that the price of the RTX 4060 Ti could drop to around $400 as its release date approaches, but this seems unlikely. It would be interesting to see how the sales of the RTX 4070 at its $599 price point influence future pricing trends.
Currently, the RTX 4060 Ti is rumored to be built on the AD106 GPU, the same chip used in the mobile RTX 4070. The card is expected to have 4352 CUDA cores, fewer than the mobile GPU’s 4608 cores, and a boost clock of 2,535 MHz. However, the RTX 4060 Ti’s 8GB VRAM limitation could be a point of concern for some gamers, especially given its rumored 128-bit memory bus and 288 GB/s memory bandwidth.
At a rumored $450 price point, the RTX 4060 Ti may struggle to convince gamers that it’s worth the upgrade from the RTX 3060 Ti, especially when considering the hardware limitations. As the launch date approaches, consumers will have to weigh the benefits of the anticipated performance boost against the increase in cost.
