OpenAI is working on a Chrome-competitor web browser

Ana sayfa / News

OpenAI has developed a new AI-powered web browser. According to three sources with direct knowledge of the process who spoke to Reuters, the browser will be available to users in the coming weeks. The company is positioning it directly against Google Chrome.

Developed as an alternative to Chrome, which plays a critical role in Google’s ad-based business model, this new product aims to provide deeper and more direct data on users’ web behavior.

The new browser features a chat interface similar to ChatGPT. This interface allows users to access information through chat without having to visit websites directly. OpenAI’s long-term plans include integrating the browser with AI-powered tools to provide systems that can take actions on behalf of users.

Actions such as making reservations, filling out forms, or browsing a website will be performed directly by these agents within the browser. OpenAI built this browser on Google’s open-source Chromium framework.

This also forms the basis of other browsers such as Microsoft Edge and Opera. Last year, the company acquired two senior Google executives who were part of the Chrome development team.

Furthermore, in a court hearing earlier this year, OpenAI officials stated that they would be interested in purchasing Chrome if Google were forced to sell it. Google stated that it had no plans to sell it and announced that it would appeal the monopoly ruling.

At a time when competition in the web browser market is increasingly fierce, OpenAI aims to stand out by developing not just a chat plugin but a standalone browser that can directly control user behavior.

Google Chrome’s global market share exceeds 66 percent, while Apple’s Safari is second at 16 percent. OpenAI’s browser enters the market as a new player with the potential to shift these balances.
