OpenAI acquires Rockset to enhance enterprise AI
Rockset was founded in 2016 by former Facebook engineers Venkat Venkataramani and Tudor Bosman, along with database architect Dhruba Borthakur. The company developed tools that automatically retrieve data from databases and cloud storage services, indexing this data for search and analysis applications. Rockset’s database platform powered applications such as recommendation engines, logistics tracking dashboards, and especially chatbots in fintech and e-commerce sectors.
OpenAI aims to use Rockset’s technology to offer its customers the ability to “better utilize their data” and “access real-time information.” This means that OpenAI’s models could make fewer errors or be better tuned for specific business uses by leveraging a company’s data.
OpenAI plans to make its AI applications more robust and useful by utilizing Rockset’s advanced data retrieval infrastructure. This move is seen as part of OpenAI’s significant investments in corporate sales and technology organizations.
In May, OpenAI signed an agreement with PwC to sell OpenAI’s tools to other businesses. The previous month, it launched a special model tuning and consulting program for businesses. These steps have started to bear fruit, with OpenAI’s annual revenue expected to exceed $3.4 billion this year. It was announced that OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform has approximately 600,000 corporate users, and 93% of Fortune 500 companies use this platform.
