OpenAI dismissed rumors this week that it would soon reveal a new AI-powered search engine. Reports had surfaced in Reuters and Bloomberg stating OpenAI was working on such a system and planned to announce its launch on Monday, May 13th.

However, in a message posted today on X, his account on the social network formerly known as Twitter, OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman clarified that a search engine would not be part of the announcements scheduled for that date.
While OpenAI confirmed it will be livestreaming announcements related to updates for its conversational AI models ChatGPT and plans for GPT-4, Altman stated the rumored search engine was “not something we’re announcing.” He did tease that OpenAI has “been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love!” without providing specifics.
The denials come as a surprise given the reports from other reputable outlets earlier this week. OpenAI is no stranger to ambitious projects in AI and has already launched tools like DALL-E 2 for image generation and the recently unveiled Sora for animating videos from text. A search engine would have cemented its position at the forefront of general-purpose AI development.
For now, details of OpenAI’s upcoming announcements remain scarce. The livestream slated for Monday at 1pm Eastern may provide clues around the “new stuff” Altman hinted is in the works
