Oppo has announced that it will not keep AI features exclusive to its expensive phones, but will bring AI features to all its devices, regardless of price. According to the company, AI tools will reach its high-end Find series phones, Reno series and even some F and A series devices.
Oppo wants to give 50 million Oppo device owners access to productive AI features by the end of 2024
This is a serious commitment, because there are big differences between Oppo devices. Oppo works with both Qualcomm and MediaTek on the processor side, and some are running Android without Google Services, which poses a challenge to ensure that the built-in AI features work consistently.
Bringing AI features to the Find and Reno series isn’t too difficult, but the same features weren’t expected to come to the cheaper F and A series phones. However, Oppo admits that the differences in processors will affect which devices will be viable, which means that not every F and A series phone will have the new features, just some of them.
Oppo is working with Google to bring Gemini Nano features to the next Find X device and the Reno 12 family, and is collaborating with MediaTek to boost computational efficiency and storage. The company is also working with Microsoft to use AI for natural voice and text conversion and to improve connections between desktop machines and smartphones.
While very interesting, the exact details of the updates and which tools will actually be rolled out to the phones are unknown. Oppo has focused on productive AI tools such as AI Eraser, giving the impression that these features will be the main AI tool coming to its smartphones.
Apart from the statement that 50 million Oppo phone owners will have access to AI tools this year, no release dates for software updates were given. It is also unknown how language support and regional differences will affect which devices will have AI tools, and whether certain AI services will be charged for in the future.
