Pinterest is limiting AI-generated content

With the advancement of artificial intelligence technologies, creating content has become easier than ever. However, this has also led to an increase in low-quality, misleading, or unnecessary content, often referred to as “AI garbage,” particularly on social media platforms. Pinterest, the visual-focused social media platform, has taken a significant step toward addressing this issue, introducing a new feature that gives users back control.

According to a statement from Pinterest, users can now limit how often AI-generated posts in certain categories appear in their feeds. This new setting is available on Android and web starting Thursday. iOS users are expected to receive the feature in the coming weeks. This aims to create a balance between human-generated and AI-generated content.

Users can access this new setting from the “Main Feed Editor” section of their accounts. Within this section, users can reduce the display of AI content by toggling the toggle to “GenAI Interests.” Pinterest stated that it initially enabled this feature for categories most susceptible to AI-generated or curated content. The company plans to expand this option to more categories in the future based on user feedback.

Pinterest Chief Technology Officer Matt Madrigal emphasized that their goal isn’t to eliminate all AI-generated posts. Madrigal stated that these new controls “strike the right balance between human creativity and AI innovation.” It’s also important to note that this new setting doesn’t completely block AI content; it simply reduces its density in certain categories.
