Sony officially announced that the PlayStation 5 has become the company’s most profitable console generation in its financial history. This announcement came during a presentation at the Tokyo Game Show 2025. While the PS5 still falls short of the PlayStation 2’s record in total shipments, it has achieved the highest revenue figures of any console generation.
PlayStation 5 Becomes the Most Profitable Console
According to company data, the PS5 has shipped over 80.3 million units to date. In contrast, the PS2 remains the company’s best-selling console with a record 160 million units sold. However, a table included in Sony executive Hideaki Nishino’s presentation showed that the PS5 generation generated $136 billion in revenue for the company between 2020 and 2024.
By comparison, the original PlayStation generated $24 billion in revenue between 1994 and 1999, while the PS2 generated $44 billion between 2000 and 2005. Despite reaching $71 billion in revenue during the PS3 era, it was a challenging generation for the company in terms of both revenue and operating losses.
Sony’s financial calculations don’t just include console hardware sales. All versions of the PS5, DualSense accessories, PS VR2, PlayStation Store revenue, PlayStation Plus subscriptions, cloud gaming and streaming services, PlayStation Direct sales, and first-party game revenue are also included in this high figure.
This data was first shared during the Business Segment Meeting held in May. At that time, the PS5 led the way in operating revenue with $13 billion.
Operating revenue for other consoles was reported as $9 billion for the PS4, $3 billion for the PS1, and $2 billion for the PS2. It was also revealed that the PS3 generation caused the company a $4 billion loss.
