Sony announced that the number of active users of PlayStation 5 has surpassed PlayStation 4 for the first time. The statement, which came with the official data for the first quarter of 2024, revealed that the new-generation console has surpassed its predecessor in terms of users approximately three and a half years after the launch of PS5.
PlayStation 5 peaked in number of users
According to the statement, not only hardware sales but also the service model carried out together with the game ecosystem have a great impact on this turning point. In particular, the expansion of PS5’s game library, innovations in PlayStation Plus service and the normalization process in the supply chain have accelerated the transition of users to PS5.
According to the data shared by Sony, the majority of PlayStation’s total 124 million monthly active users now access the system via PS5. PlayStation 4 has stood out as one of Sony’s most successful consoles in terms of both sales volume and user loyalty since its release in 2013.
However, at this point, it seems that PS5 has taken over the flag in terms of both technology and user interest. The company is working on strategies to maintain and increase this momentum after the PS5 took the lead.
Sony’s success on the hardware side continues to be supported by exclusive game launches and a service-based revenue model. The PlayStation 5 had long been limited due to supply issues.
However, the resolution of these issues to a large extent has paved the way for the console to reach a wider audience. The company has also started to share the first official information about the PlayStation 6, and it seems that the current generation is experiencing its strongest period.
