Sony’s recently launched PlayStation 5 Pro has become the center of criticism despite its powerful specifications, mainly due to its steep price. The new console is priced at €799 globally. Meanwhile, an unexpected statement came from Xbox regarding the pricing.
Phil Spencer: The Market Won’t Grow with $1,000 Consoles
As Sony faces backlash over the PlayStation 5 Pro’s controversial price, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer voiced his opinion during an interview with Bloomberg. Addressing the price issue, Spencer commented:
“I’m very happy with where the industry is headed. To reach new players, we need to creatively and effectively embrace new business models, new devices, and accessible avenues. The market won’t grow with $1,000 consoles.”
In the U.S., the PlayStation 5 Pro is priced at $699, but when optional accessories like the vertical stand and disc drive are included, the total cost surpasses $800. This makes the PlayStation 5 Pro twice as expensive as its predecessor, the PlayStation 4 Pro, which came with a built-in disc drive. A similar situation is evident in Europe.
Despite the criticism, Sony is quite pleased with the PlayStation 5 Pro’s sales. Hiroki Totoki, Sony’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), recently announced that the new console’s sales have surpassed those of the PlayStation 4 Pro during the same period.
