Users are angry about Reddit’s decision to make API support paid. The popular Apollo app, which was preferred by many users over the official Reddit app for its better interface, will also shut down as a result. This decision has led to a backlash from hundreds of thousands of users.
CEO Steve Huffman: Do not wear Reddit-branded clothing outside!
Following the announcement that Reddit would make API support paid, the developer of the Apollo app confirmed that the app would be shutting down. This triggered a massive protest across the platform. Many of the communities with hundreds of thousands of members went into “hiding” mode to reduce interactions, effectively preventing their posts from appearing on the front page.
Today, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman sent an email to the employees, emphasizing that they haven’t seen a significant change in revenue and that company decisions are more important than what users want.
However, he warned them to be careful while wearing clothing with the Reddit logo outside, as they could be targeted by angry users in response to the decision. Steve Huffman’s relevant email is as follows:
“We haven’t noticed a significant impact on revenue so far, and we will continue to monitor it.
There’s a lot of noise about this. One of the loudest we’ve seen. Please know that our teams have been informed about this, and like all the explosions on Reddit, this too shall pass.
I’m sorry to say this, but please be cautious when wearing Reddit clothing in public. Some people are really angry, and we don’t want you to be the target of their anger.”
Steve Huffman
It is believed that Reddit may reconsider its decision to make API support paid, as several third-party apps have already announced their closure, and the number of communities going into hiding mode is increasing.
