Sony has officially announced the PlayStation 5 Pro, a more powerful version of the PS5 intended for hardcore gamers. However, in a move that may frustrate some fans, the PS5 Pro will only be available in an all-digital format at launch.
PS5 Pro ditches the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive
The PS5 Pro ditches the Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive found in the standard PS5 console. Instead, it will operate as a digital-only device capable of playing games downloaded from the PlayStation Store or accessed via streaming services.
For those who still wish to use physical disc-based games, Sony will be offering an optional Ultra HD Blu-ray drive as a separate add-on purchase. The drive can simply be plugged into the PS5 Pro through a dedicated expansion slot.
Going digital-only should help keep costs down for the more powerful PlayStation 5 Pro. However, buying the system without an optical drive and then adding one later will make for a much more expensive overall package. The base PlayStation 5 Pro price hasn’t been confirmed yet, but adding the estimated $79.99 optical drive accessory means the full cost could exceed $700.
While digital distribution is growing, physical disc games remain popular for many PlayStation owners. Making the drive an extra purchase risks alienating some fans. However, as a premium product aimed at enthusiasts, Sony may feel the PS5 Pro’s higher price is justified for its targeted audience. The compromise should at least allow optical functionality to be added post-launch for those who want it.
Reaction online has been mixed so far. Some support going all-digital to cut costs, while others argue bundling the drive should be standard – especially at the rumored high price point. Only time will tell if Sony’s strategy proves effective.
