Competition in the gaming world has reached a whole new level in 2025. While Nintendo’s next-generation hardware is sweeping the market, the latest data from the UK confirms that the PS5 has surpassed the Switch 2. Sony’s console maintains its leadership despite fierce competition and price increases.
The numbers are surprising: PS5 surpasses Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2 had a fantastic start with its launch on June 5, 2025, overcoming stock issues and breaking records. However, according to Game Business data, the PlayStation 5 was still the best-selling console of the year in the UK by the end of October. Despite a 15 percent year-on-year sales decline due to price increases, Sony managed to maintain its top spot in total sales.
Taking advantage of the months when the Switch 2 was not available, Sony made a significant push, especially in October. The console increased sales by 36 percent, solidifying its position as the best-selling system of the month. With its dominance in the Spanish market and strong Black Friday campaigns, this momentum is expected to continue to grow in November.
Sony is focused on integrating gamers into its ecosystem rather than competing. The console, which is approaching 100 million global sales, seems likely to achieve this goal ahead of next year’s release of GTA 6. It remains to be seen how it will fare against the Switch 2 during the holiday season.
