Qualcomm has introduced its new fast charging standard, Quick Charge 5 Plus. This new solution uses a lower voltage than other fast charging technologies, resulting in less heat and more efficient power delivery.
Quick Charge 5 Plus Launched
Devices supporting Quick Charge 5 Plus can charge up to 140W at 20V/7A. Qualcomm notes that other solutions limited to 5A rely on higher voltages for higher wattage, resulting in increased heat generation, lower efficiency, and higher costs. Quick Charge 5+, however, automatically adjusts the voltage and current according to the device’s needs.
The new technology is backward compatible with previous Quick Charge versions. This technology, based on USB PD-PPS protocol, allows charging a wide range of devices, including iPhones and laptops, with a Quick Charge 5+-certified charger.
The first devices supporting Quick Charge 5+ are expected to be announced at the Snapdragon Summit 2025 on September 23-25. Quick Charge 5+ certified accessories and chargers will be available later this year.
Qualcomm states that its new protocol allows devices to maintain their top charging speeds longer by managing high currents with lower voltage. The company emphasizes that this method generates less heat and provides greater efficiency, unlike solutions that increase voltage to achieve more wattage. This translates to a more consistent charging experience for users.
