Range-extending solution from Mercedes! Solar-powered paint is coming

Ana sayfa / News

Mercedes-Benz has introduced “solar coating” technology, a solar energy-generating paint coating developed to solve the range problem in electric vehicles. Unlike conventional photovoltaic panels, the new coating has a non-toxic material that does not contain silicon and rare earth elements. The paint is applied to the surface of the vehicle through a nanotechnological process, transforming the entire vehicle into an energy-generating surface.

First of all, this special coating is only 5 micrometers thick and has an energy conversion rate of up to 20%. With this technology, which effectively captures 94% of the sun’s energy, the 11 square meter surface of a mid-size SUV can generate enough energy to provide a range of up to 12,000 kilometers per year. These values were measured in sunlight simulations at the production facilities in Stuttgart.

The solar paint coating weighs just 50 grams/m², which means it generates energy without affecting the vehicle’s performance. The material is also fully recyclable. In addition to this coating, Mercedes plans to introduce other innovations. Here are the innovations we are likely to see in the coming period:

Enhancing the driving experience with augmented reality glasses,
Vegan interior materials and the use of recycled plastic,
Longer-lasting vehicles with more durable batteries and braking systems.

Could this Mercedes-Benz innovation be the solution to the problems of range and charging station dependency in electric vehicles? Let us know in the comments section below.
