NASA’s Mars helicopter continues to attract attention with its Ingenuity helicopter, which has been performing its duty on the red planet since April 2021. In its latest statement, the space agency stated that the Ingenuity helicopter broke a new record on the surface of Mars. Here are the details!
The Ingenuity helicopter reached a speed of 22.4 miles per second!
The Ingenuity helicopter sent by NASA to the red planet has achieved many successes. The helicopter, which has been on duty since April 2021, broke a new speed record according to the latest news. The drone-like helicopter achieved the record during its 62 flights around the planet .
However, during the flight, Ingenuity reached a speed of 10 meters per second (22.4 mph) . The helicopter, which had previously made two flights at the end of last month, broke the speed record of 8 m/s (17.9 mph). Now he has broken record after record.
The event is a significant achievement for the NASA team overseeing the Mars mission, which includes the Perseverance rover. Ingenuity first landed on Mars in April 2021, becoming the first aircraft to perform powered and controlled flight on another planet. However, at the end of this flight, only the main one remained in the air.
Since then, the 4-pound , 19-inch-high helicopter has managed to cross a distance of 2,325 feet (708.9 meters) in a single flight. Ingenuity’s flight time on 62 flights covered a total distance of 9 miles . The time obtained from these flights is 113 minutes .
The main purpose of the current mission is to search for evidence of ancient life. It plans to do this with the help of Ingenuity. On the other hand, it will bring the data collected from the planet to Earth for analysis. Thus, scientists will obtain more detailed information about ancient life. Ingenuity is also collecting information about conditions on the planet to help NASA better prepare for its first human mission to Mars, which it plans to launch in 2030.
