Robot ARTEMIS is getting ready for a football match

ARTEMIS, the world’s fastest humanoid robot model, will play a football match according to a recent announcement. The ARTEMIS robot model is the result of collaborative work. The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Samueli School of Engineering are behind this long-developed humanoid robot model.

The robot, whose name stands for “Advanced Robotic Technology for Enhanced Mobility and Improved Stability”, is considered to be the fastest in its class with a movement speed of 2.1 m/s. Like Boston Dynamics’ ATLAS, ARTEMIS, which can balance itself and move effectively, works independently without external power/data connection and also can jump. Additionally, it is reported that the robot is seriously resistant to external impacts.

According to the researchers, ARTEMIS uses specially designed torque-controlled “proprioceptive actuators” that act like biological muscles. So, the robot, which differs from many similar robots in this regard, can easily navigate even on bumpy terrain. ARTEMIS weighs 37 kg and stands 1 meter 42 cm tall. ARTEMIS is also considered female by the research team. Also, the robot wears normal sneakers. The researchers prefer a pair of Nike sneakers in the presentation video.

In addition to being a research platform, ARTEMIS is also being developed as a football robot for the RoboCup. RoboCup is an autonomous robot football competition. According to a university press release, ARTEMIS will travel to Bordeaux, France in July to compete in the 2023 RoboCup. The official goal of RoboCup is to create a team of robots that will beat humans in a football match by 2050.

“We’re very excited to take ARTEMIS out for field testing here at UCLA, and we see this as an opportunity to promote science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to a much wider audience,” said Dennis Hong, a UCLA professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and the director of RoMeLa.
