The troubled period at Rocksteady Studios continues in 2025. The developer of the Batman Arkham series has made a new round of layoffs following the financial disaster of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. This cut, which took place before the new year, particularly affected the quality department.
Rocksteady Studios downsized once again
The number of employees affected at Rocksteady Studios is not yet known. However, it was stated that the cuts affected the programming and art teams and further reduced the quality assurance team, which was previously reduced to around 15 people.
Developed as a live-service game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League aimed to transfer Rocksteady’s success in the single-player field to the service model. However, it ultimately disappointed, similar to Bethesda’s Redfall production.
Parent company Warner Bros. Games announced that it lost nearly $200 million on the project. Despite this failure, Warner Bros. continues to stick to its free-to-play and live service strategy. In this context, the final season of Suicide Squad will be released as planned this month.
Rocksteady’s difficulties also represent the downsizing trend in the industry that began in 2024. Many companies, from major brands like Microsoft to small independent studios, have been forced to cut staff and reduce investments in the face of market conditions.
The future of both Rocksteady Studios and the Suicide Squad brand remains uncertain. It remains to be seen how the studio and Warner Bros. will cope with the ongoing challenges.
