Romania is purchasing warships from Turkey to strengthen its military presence in the Black Sea. The Hisar-class light corvette TCG Akhisar (P-1220), which will enter the Turkish Navy inventory at the end of 2024, will be purchased by Romania for €223 million plus tax. The total cost, including VAT, is expected to reach €265 million (approximately $308 million).
Romania Prepares to Purchase Warships from Turkey
The agreement for the Ankara-Bucharest route is reportedly initiated by the Romanian Ministry of Defense as part of an “emergency procurement” initiative. Aiming to quickly respond to the increasing security risks in the Black Sea, Romania has opted for an already operational vessel. Delivery is planned to take place within just six months, following approval by the Romanian Parliament.
With a length of 99.5 meters and a displacement of 2,300 tons, the TCG Akhisar stands out with its multi-role design. The corvette, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 24 knots (approximately 45 km/h), can operate continuously at sea for 21 days. Its range reaches 8,300 kilometers. The vessel is equipped with a 76 mm naval gun manufactured by MKE, the 35 mm GÖKDENİZ air defense system developed by Aselsan, and a hangar for helicopters and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The TCG Akhisar, which will be purchased by Romania, is planned to undergo modernization at a domestic shipyard after joining the Romanian Navy. It is expected that the vessel will be re-equipped with NATO-compatible Western-origin weapon systems, particularly Norwegian-made NSM (Naval Strike Missile) anti-ship missiles.
The corvette, built by Turkey, meets NATO standards in terms of both platform and equipment. This acquisition reduces Romania’s dependence on foreign sources in its defense industry and further enhances military cooperation with Turkey.
