Tensions between Russia and tech giants have reached a new level. A Russian court case imposed a historic fine on Google for blocking various Russian channels on YouTube. Accordingly, the fine is more than 20 times higher than estimates of world wealth.

A Russian court has fined Google 20.5 decillion dollars for blocking Russian state television channels on YouTube. This fine is more than 20 times higher than estimates of the world’s wealth.

The fine came after the YouTube platform blocked access to Russia-backed TV channels such as RT, Sputnik and Rossiya 24. Regulators said Google violated Russian law by censoring internet content. Google’s parent company Alphabet’s gross profit last year was only $174 billion.

Experts state that Google is unlikely to pay this fine. If the fine is not paid, an additional fine of one thousand dollars per day will continue to be applied. These additional penalties will double weekly. In addition, if not paid within 9 months, the penalty will increase even more.

Google has acknowledged that it has encountered legal problems in Russia. But it said it did not believe they would have a significant impact. The company had blocked Russian channels, saying it was complying with Western sanctions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia is increasing pressure on Google. It said state agencies are reviewing cases in Turkey, Hungary, Spain, South Africa and other countries to get YouTube to lift restrictions.
