Russia lands Luna 25 on the Moon, achieving a 47-year milestone

Russia successfully made its first landing on the Moon after 47 years. Roscosmos, which traveled to the Moon with the spacecraft named Luna 25, reached an important milestone in space exploration. The mission was normally planned to be carried out together with the European Space Agency, but the agreements broke down after the Ukrainian war.

Russia successfully launched its lunar mission Luna 25

According to the Russian space agency Roscosmos, the crewless Luna 25 spacecraft has landed on the lunar surface as of today. The lunar mission was carried out by a Soyuz-2 rocket and successfully completed its first stage. Luna 25 was also Russia’s first lunar mission since Luna 24, which returned to Earth after taking samples from the Moon in 1976.

For about a year, the new lunar rover will study the composition of the Moon’s polar soil and its thin atmosphere, known as the exosphere. The scientific instrument package sent with Luna 25 includes a robotic arm to collect soil samples.

James Webb spots mysterious “question mark” object in space

A question mark-like star in the vacuum of space has aroused curiosity. Here is that photo taken by the James Webb telescope.

Luna 25 was originally to be part of a joint lunar exploration program between Roscosmos and the European Space Agency. However, ESA ended its partnership with Russia in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine.

It is worth noting that there have been many recent missions to the Moon. For example, in recent weeks, India completed its Chandrayaan-3 mission and successfully landed on the Moon’s south pole. The two countries are competing in this area.

Russian scientists believe that Luna 25’s year-long operations will pave the way for future lunar missions. It will also allow Russian cosmonauts to return to the Moon for the first time since the 1970s.
