Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub have made history once again by completing a long-term mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). As of September 20, 2024, the two cosmonauts have broken the record for the longest time in space on a single mission, having spent 370 days aboard the ISS. Having successfully completed their mission, Kononenko and Chub will return to Earth on September 23, having spent a total of 374 days in space.

It is a great opportunity to better understand the effects of long-term space missions on human health and to prepare for future long-distance space missions such as Mars. Kononenko and Chub also arrived at the ISS in September 2023 with the Soyuz MS-24 spacecraft to carry out various tasks for humanity.
The cosmonauts achieved great success by serving on the ISS for over a year. However, this success did not break the record for the longest space stay in human history. This record belongs to Russian cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov , who spent 437 days on the Mir Space Station between 1994 and 1995. Thanks to this long-term mission, Polyakov provided valuable data on the effects of space on the human body.
Kononenko and Chub have continued this tradition by extending the duration of space missions even further. Such long-duration missions pave the way for much longer-term space exploration, such as future missions to Mars.
