We first shared with you in 2022 that Samsung was developing new GDDR7 memory. We have been closely following these developments for a while now. This is because, compared to the existing GDDR6 and GDDR6X, it will be a significant step forward, especially in terms of performance and support for new technologies. Indeed, the awaited day has arrived, and Samsung has introduced 32 Gbps GDDR7 memories. So, what do they offer?
Samsung introduced 32 Gbps GDDR7 memories!
Samsung has made a significant innovation in graphics memory technology by introducing new GDDR7 memories. These new memories offer significant improvements compared to the currently used GDDR6 and GDDR6X. GDDR7 provides an impressive speed of 32 Gbps, while GDDR6 generally sees speeds of 16 Gbps and GDDR6X between 19-21 Gbps. This increase in speed will enhance the graphic processing capacities of graphics cards, allowing for higher performance.
Samsung’s GDDR7 memories operate at just 1.1 V DRAM voltage, leaving behind JEDEC’s 1.2 V GDDR7 standard voltage. This translates to up to 20% improvements in energy efficiency. Therefore, it reduces environmental impact while enabling systems to produce less heat and have a longer lifespan.
Among the innovations brought by GDDR7 is the reduction of thermal resistance by 70% compared to GDDR6, which ensures more efficient cooling of the memory. Hence, they manage to stay cool in a stable system while displaying much higher performance.
These new memories come with a density of 16 Gbits. This makes them a suitable option for NVIDIA’s strategy of maintaining memory sizes while increasing speed. Thus, we see higher speed and performance within the current memory capacities.
Major graphics processor manufacturers like NVIDIA and AMD have also announced they will start using GDDR7 in the second half of 2024. Therefore, we will see a significant change in the consumer market starting from the summer months onwards.
