Today, Samsung announced a new big change in phone and camera technologies. The South Korean company introduced its latest 200-Megapixel Image Sensor today, named ISOCELL HP2. According to the official website, Samsung announced the new image sensor for the Ultimate High-Resolution experience in flagship smartphones. 200MP ISOCELL sensor may launch on the Galaxy S23 Ultra
Although there are no official announcements, we have a few details about the upcoming Galaxy S23 Ultra’s specs, such as chipset and camera. In the explanation for the new image sensor, we can understand that the new flagship S23 Ultra will feature the latest 200-Megapixel ISOCELL HP2 sensor.
The new 200MP ISOCELL sensor comes with the latest pixel-binning technology called Tetra2pixel. In low-lit environments, the HP2 can bin 4-to-1 for 1.2μm pixels and 50MP resolution or 16-to-1 for 2.4μm pixels and 12.5MP resulting image. Full 8K video is supported with 4-to-1 binning and 1.2μm pixels. According to the announcements, the HP2 can do 15fps bursts at its native 200MP resolution, which is twice as high as the HP3 and 50% better than the 100MP HM3 sensor.
Samsung says on the Newsroom, “The ISOCELL HP2 packs 200-million 0.6-micrometer (μm) pixels in a 1/1.3” optical format, a sensor size that is widely used in 108MP main smartphone cameras. This enables consumers to enjoy even higher resolutions in the latest high-end smartphones without larger camera bumps in their devices.”
JoonSeo Yim, Executive Vice President of Sensor Business Team at Samsung Electronics, says, “We will continue to open new horizons and solidify our presence in the expanding ultra-high-resolution sensor market.” While the new Samsung ISOCELL HP2 has entered mass production, we expect it to launch on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, on February 1.
