Samsung may be planning a major design change for its new Galaxy Watch models. According to new reports, the company wants to make its smartwatch designs more square-shaped. This means it will be similar to the Apple Watch.
Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 will have a square design
Samsung currently uses the circular watch design for its Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active series. The only exception was the company’s first smartwatch models, the Samsung Gear, Gear 2 and Gear Live, which had square displays.
Adopting a square design could help Samsung better compete with market leader Apple Watch. Since its launch in 2015, all of Apple’s models have had a rectangular/square design.
The rumored design change is said to come with the Galaxy Watch 7, which is expected to be released later this year. However, the company is expected to adopt the square design in its next new models.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Samsung is seriously considering this change. If approved, Samsung’s smartwatches will differentiate itself from competitors like Fitbit that still use round displays.
The square design could also allow for some screen size and aspect ratio optimizations that could improve the smartwatch experience. But it’s unclear when Samsung will launch its first square Galaxy watch, or how it will change its UI to take advantage of the new screen sizes.
Do you think Samsung will use a rectangular design for the Galaxy Watch 7? When buying a smartwatch, do you think it matters whether the watch has a rectangular or round design? We are waiting for your comments.
