While Samsung has not even introduced the Galaxy S25 series yet, rumours about the Galaxy S26 are already being talked about. What is a silicon-carbon battery?
Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, this new generation battery uses silicon and carbon components. Silicon-carbon batteries can store 12.8 per cent more energy than conventional lithium-ion batteries, and the battery life of the device is extended thanks to more efficient energy use. In addition, despite the increased capacity, the physical dimensions of the batteries do not change, making compact designs possible.
Samsung SDI, Samsung’s battery production arm, aims to increase the battery capacity by around 10 per cent thanks to its stacked cell production technology. This means that the Galaxy S26 can reach a battery capacity of 5500 mAh. Considering today’s foldable phones and artificial intelligence features that require high performance, such a capacity increase can give Samsung a serious advantage over its competitors.
Silicon-carbon batteries were first used by Honor in 2023 and quickly spread among Chinese manufacturers. Samsung’s transition to this technology can increase its competitiveness against Apple and other major manufacturers.
