Samsung is making the expected move!

South Korean technology giant Samsung has decided to redesign its mobile processors in-house. In line with this strategic goal, the company has established a dedicated System-on-Chip (SoC) development team dedicated solely to this purpose.

Years ago, Samsung used its own Mongoose cores, but after failing to achieve the expected success with these designs, it switched back to ARM’s Cortex cores. Now, it’s taking a completely different path.

According to the South Korean newspaper Chosun, Samsung’s Device Solutions division has established this new group, which will enable it to achieve full independence, similar to Apple and Qualcomm.

With this new model, Samsung is now developing its processor architecture, artificial intelligence units (NPUs), and all other intellectual property (IP) entirely in-house, rather than relying on off-the-shelf designs from external vendors. This new and critical team will be led by experienced Vice President Park Bong-il, a former SoC design expert who previously led custom semiconductor projects within the Device Solutions division.

Samsung has significant advantages in this initiative. The company already produces its own camera sensors and has a foundry business producing 2-nanometer GAA processes for major technology clients like Tesla.

Experts say that thanks to its internal supply chain, Samsung’s chip production costs could be lower than those of Apple and Qualcomm, which have to externally process their designs through multi-million-dollar “tape-out” processes. This initiative also appears to be a response to the demand from new and large technology clients.
