Samsung has unveiled the latest 990 EVO, a successor to the 980 SSD released in 2021. Designed to meet a wide range of computing needs, the 990 EVO is compatible with both PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 interfaces, offering versatility for various PC and notebook configurations.

While it doesn’t surpass the performance of Samsung’s current 980 PRO SSD, which utilizes the PCIe 4.0 interface, the 990 EVO offers a balanced combination of performance, efficiency and price.
Positioned as an entry-level option for users looking to upgrade from older SSD models such as the 970 EVO Plus and 980 SSD, the 990 EVO is intended to offer an attractive solution.
Key features of the Samsung 990 EVO SSD include compatibility with PCIe 4.0 x4 and PCIe 5.0 x2 interfaces, sequential read speeds up to 5,000MB/s, sequential write speeds up to 4,200MB/s, and random read and write speeds up to 700K IOPS and 800K IOPS respectively.
The SSD utilizes Samsung’s V-NAND 3-TLC chips and an in-house controller. The device also features Host Memory Buffer (HMB) technology that connects to the computer’s DRAM for optimized performance even without a dedicated DRAM module.
Notably, the 990 EVO delivers a 70% improvement in power efficiency compared to its predecessor, the 970 EVO Plus SSD, contributing to longer battery life for notebooks. The SSD also supports Modern Standby, a Windows feature that provides fast on/off functionality with uninterrupted internet connectivity and notification reception in low power/sleep states.
Samsung offers a five-year warranty on the 990 EVO SSD, which promises 600TB of total functionality for the 1TB version and 1200TB for the 2TB version. The SSD features AES 256-bit full-disk encryption and comes with Samsung Magician software for data transfer and SSD management tools.
Available in 2280 form factor, the SSD’s 1TB and 2TB models are priced at $125 and $210 respectively. The global version will be available in South Korea and other countries, with sales starting immediately.
