Samsung is trying to make its SmartSSD even smarter. The company recently introduced the second generation of its SSDs. Samsung says the new SmartSSD will process data faster and reduce latency between the SSD and the CPU
Samsung SmartSSD will process data 50 percent faster
Samsung says its new SmartSSD can process data 50% faster than the previous generation. It also uses 70 percent less power and reduces CPU utilization by 97 percent compared to standard SSD devices.
This is not the first time Samsung has started computational storage. This is the company’s second generation SmartSSD. Their first product offered some improvements over traditional storage options. But with its second-generation SmartSSD, it can raise the bar a bit higher.
One of the ways that Samsung’s new SmartSSD improved upon traditional is by removing the need to process information access on the CPU. It does this thanks to a system built into the SSD itself. AMD Xilinx Versal FPGA powers the SSD.
AMD Xilinx Versal FPGA allows Samsung‘s SmartSSD to skip sending data to other components to process. It’s a good move and one that’s proving to be useful, especially in systems where data movement is important. So, users who rely on analytics and transcoding will depend on the speed of the SmartSSD to be able to process their data quicker.
Here are the features for the first generation of SmartSSD:
- The SmartSSD CSD is a standard 2.5” (U.2) form factor solid state drive in a low 25W power envelope.
- It offers a physical storage capacity of 4TBs, with the ability to hold up to 12TBs of data or more when combined with accelerated transparent compression.
- The integrated Xilinx Kintex UltraScale+ FPGA accelerator features more than one million system logic cells and nearly 2,000 DSP (digital signal processing) slices for hardware acceleration.
