In a significant move for user safety, Australian iPhone users can now take advantage of a potentially lifesaving feature – the Emergency SOS via satellite. The new functionality is designed to ensure safety, especially in situations where conventional cell phone reception may be lacking.
No signal? No problem
This innovative feature works by allowing users to share their location via satellite if they find themselves in an area with poor reception. Should an emergency arise, activating the Emergency SOS feature will connect users via text to a specialized relay center. Here, Apple-trained emergency professionals take the reins, passing on your SOS to an Emergency Call Centre that dispatches the local emergency authority to provide assistance.
It’s crucial to remember that users should initially attempt to call the emergency services directly. If that proves unsuccessful, they can tap a pop-up message that says “text via satellite.”
Not just for emergencies
Users are required to fill out a brief questionnaire to specify the nature of the emergency and who requires aid. After submission, the iPhone will notify your emergency contacts of your location and share a transcript of your questionnaire responses.
The satellite SOS feature is not only designed for dire circumstances. It also provides a practical tool for users to share their location with loved ones when they’re off the grid, such as during bushwalking or traveling in remote areas. Activating this feature is straightforward – simply navigate to the Me tab in the Find My app, tap on My Location via Satellite, and select Send My Location.
Initially introduced in countries like the United Kingdom and the United States in late 2022, the feature is now making its way to the shores of Australia.
A boon for Aussie iPhone users
With this new satellite SOS feature, iPhone users in Australia can have an extra layer of security, knowing they have a lifeline even in the most remote areas with poor signal. It’s a testament to Apple’s commitment to enhancing user safety across the globe.
