Saudi Arabia’s Neom project could change the climate!

Ana sayfa / News

The Neom mega project located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia has become a hot topic due to the impacts it will create on the environment and climate. It is stated that the total cost of the project, which has received over 50 billion dollars in investment so far, could reach 8.8 trillion dollars.

Neom draws attention with the giant structure called The Line, planned to be 500 meters high and 170 kilometers long. This structure, which will extend like a wall in the middle of the desert within the scope of the project, has become a subject of study not only in terms of urbanization but also in terms of its climatic effects.

According to atmospheric physics and chemistry expert Prof. Donald Wuebbles, serious changes can be observed in the air circulation, precipitation patterns and wind regime in the region with the construction process. It is said that the project will have significant impacts not only on natural life but also in terms of resource consumption.

According to Wuebbles’ statements, the amount of material required for The Line is equivalent to approximately 20 percent of the world’s steel production. Concrete production has already significantly increased carbon emissions in the region.

The reflective exterior of the structure is considered to pose a threat to many species, especially birds. In addition, other mega projects such as Oxagon, Treyam and Epicon are being built simultaneously in the same area. These buildings will also be the focus of criticism due to their size, speed of construction and environmental impact.
