Qualcomm will allegedly make some changes for its next flagship chipset. According to a new leak, Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will take a different approach to core configuration. It is thought to copy the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 in this regard.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s CPU architecture leaked
New details about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, codenamed “Sun”, have emerged from China. According to this, the chip will have an octa-core CPU architecture consisting of two “Phoenix” large cores and six “Phoenix” medium cores. This means that it will completely abandon small cores.
If the claims are true, this would represent a first for the Snapdragon architecture. Currently, 8 Gen 1, 8 Gen 2 and 8 Gen 3 are composed of one/two/three or two/two/two/two (large/medium/small) cores.
The removal of small cores means that the processor will only focus on powerful cores. This will make it stand out in multi-core performance tests.
However, the removal of energy-efficient small cores that handle lighter workloads could negatively impact battery life and thermal performance.
MediaTek and Huawei recently launched Dimensity and Kirin chips without small cores, with mixed results. However, MediaTek claimed that the Dimensity 9300’s small cores save 10-15 percent energy compared to previous architectures.
8 Gen 4 will be developed using TSMC’s 3nm technology. If the leaked specs are accurate, the complete elimination of small cores will represent a significant change.
