On September 9, 2024, Apple held one of the year’s biggest and most important events. While many new products were introduced during the event, the focus was on the iPhone 16 series. Naturally, the processors used in the new phones also took center stage. So, which is better—the A18 Pro processor powering the iPhone 16 Pro models, or the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4? Here’s the comparison in detail:
A18 Pro: Apple’s Most Powerful Mobile Processor
The iPhone 16 series, fully utilizing Apple Intelligence features, promises a highly smooth experience for users thanks to the A18 processors. Introduced as Apple’s most powerful and fastest mobile processor, the A18 Pro is built using TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process. The chip features six cores, consisting of 2x 4.05GHz performance cores and 4x 2.2GHz efficiency cores, along with a new 16-core Neural Engine.
Additionally, the processor supports Ray Tracing, similar to NVIDIA’s RTX models, allowing for smooth gameplay of AAA titles, and it powers the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models. On the other side, we have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, expected to be announced next month.
Although there’s no official announcement yet, rumors suggest that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will also be built using TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process, just like the A18 Pro. The chip will have two main cores clocked at 4.37GHz, offering higher speeds, along with six efficiency cores, making it an eight-core processor with the Adreno 830 GPU.
In terms of Geekbench scores, the two processors are almost identical, though there are slight differences. According to leaked results, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 scored 2,884 in single-core tests and 8,840 in multi-core tests.
On the other hand, Apple’s A18 Pro scored around 3,500 in single-core tests, surpassing the Snapdragon, but lagged slightly behind in multi-core performance with a score of 8,200—approximately 600 points lower than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
While the A18 Pro leads in single-core performance, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 edges ahead in multi-core tasks. The final decision may come down to platform preference: Android or iOS. What do you think? Would you choose Android or iOS? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
